Retail Recommendations for New Airport Terminal Mix Local Flair with National Brands

Board of Supervisors Reviewing Recommendations Nov. 9

SACRAMENTO, CA. — Passengers at Sacramento International Airport can expect to find last minute necessities, travel gadgets, gifts and local products when the new Central Terminal B opens in late 2011. On November 9, 2010, the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors will be asked to approve the evaluation panel’s recommendation to award contracts to four retail concessionaires – The Paradies Shops, Pacific Gateway Concessions, Brookstone Company, Inc., and Erwin Pearl Retail, Inc.

“The selection of retailers from the four companies offers a broad range of stores, including a local operator and local brands,” said G. Hardy Acree, Director of Airports at Sacramento County Airport System. “These recommendations will further enhance the sense of place for Sacramento International Airport, and provide passengers with all the necessities of travel.”

The concepts offered by the recommended concessionaires include a mix of local news brands, a locally owned specialty gift store and nationally recognized retailers. Locally sourced products will be offered whenever possible and a diverse range of products will be available on both the air and land sides of the terminal. The recommended concessionaires and their concepts are:

The Paradies Shops dba Paradies-Sacramento LLC

Airside Concourse Locations:

  • Good Day Sacramento – news and gifts
  • Visions of Eden – locally owned specialty gift and home accessories store from Old Sacramento
  • InMotion – music, movies, electronics and accessories
  • Lacoste – apparel for men and women
  • Brighton – jewelry, accessories and handbags for women
  • Healthy Living – organic and healthy pre-packaged snacks, beverages and fresh fruit

Landside Terminal Locations:

  • CNBC News – news and gifts
  • Experience Sacramento – outdoor themed apparel and gifts

Pacific Gateway Concessions, LLC dba PGC Sacramento JV

Airside Concourse Location:

  • U.S. News and World Report – news and gifts

Landside Terminal Location:

  • The Sacramento Bee/Eco Grounds by Java City – news and gifts with grab-and-go coffee and snacks

Brookstone Company Inc.

  • Airside concourse location offering electronics, travel accessories and luggage

Erwin Pearl, Inc.

  • Airside concourse location offering fashion jewelry

In addition to providing services necessary for a satisfactory customer experience, airport concessions generate non-airline revenue. The Airport Revenue News (ARN) 2009 Fact Book indicates that average sales per square foot of $1,083 for retail stores at other medium hub U.S. airports. For year one of the retail agreements, the average sales per square foot of the recommended concessionaires is expected to exceed the industry average for similar-sized airports.

Eight (8) companies submitted proposals for eight (8) of the ten (10) packages of space available for retail in the terminal. Packaging provides a balance between the sales opportunities available and the best mix for services through the new facilities. All eight proposers were qualified for evaluation and were invited for interviews.
