Sacramento County Department of Airports wins Greater Sacramento Economic Council Award
Airport System recognized for increasing region’s competitiveness for business investment

Sacramento, CA – The Greater Sacramento Economic Council (GSEC) recognized Sacramento County Department of Airports (SCDA) with its Competitiveness Award at GSEC’s Annual Celebration event May 16.

The annual award is presented to an organization that has contributed to the Greater Sacramento region in a meaningful way to develop strategies, programs and policy solutions that enhance tradable-sector economic development and benchmark regional progress against competitor markets.

“All of us at SCDA are deeply honored to receive this recognition,” said Cindy Nichol, Director, Sacramento County Department of Airports. “Looking ahead, we remain committed to furthering our contributions to the region’s economy and global reputation. We have exciting projects in the pipeline that will continue to elevate our airport system, attracting investment and enhancing our region’s connectivity.”

Following the announcement of a $1.3 billion facility expansion initiative, SMForward in 2023, Sacramento International Airport introduced a new food and beverage program to showcase Greater Sacramento’s culinary scene. The phased program will feature beloved local restaurants as well as national brands arriving at the SMF starting in late 2024.

Additionally, over the past year, SCDA has added 12 new nonstop air service destinations, including its inaugural nonstop flights to Toronto and Miami. In collaboration with GSEC, the SCDA also launched Northern California’s first Regional Air Alliance in late 2023. This cross-industry partnership aims to secure additional flights connecting the Greater Sacramento region to Europe.

Despite reaching record passenger volumes, Sacramento International Airport continues to lead nationally in customer satisfaction, earning the distinction as the number one airport in the country for “stress-free” travel by AirHelp earlier this year.

“Sacramento International Airport serves as the gateway to our vibrant region,” said Barry Broome, President & CEO, Greater Sacramento Economic Council. “The Airport’s ongoing efforts to enhance flight options, provide exemplary customer service and infuse our region’s culture into the traveler experience have set the standard for excellence in air travel. Sacramento International Airport is not only a beacon of quality and convenience in the heart of Greater Sacramento, but it also plays a pivotal role in fostering investment and elevating our region’s global reputation.”

The Sacramento County Department of Airports is responsible for planning, developing, operating and maintaining the county’s four airports: Sacramento International Airport, Executive Airport, Mather Airport and Franklin Field. Sacramento International Airport offers more than 155 daily nonstop flights on 12 domestic and international carriers to 36 destinations. The regional economic impact of the Sacramento County Department of Airports is more than $4 billion annually. For more information, visit
