SMF Marks 20 Consecutive Months of Growth, Setting July Passenger Record

Sacramento, CA – Sacramento International Airport (SMF) broke yet another record in July, surpassing June’s historic milestone to set the busiest month in Airport history.

SMF welcomed 1,328,712 total passengers in July, a 3.3 percent increase year-over-year and the highest monthly total ever recorded. During July, SMF also offered its most robust nonstop flight schedule in history, with service from 11 airlines to 52 destinations and up to 202 departures on peak travel days, typically Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays.

“Month after month, SMF continues to demonstrate its vital role as a driver of regional growth and connectivity,” said Director of Airports for Sacramento County, Cindy Nichol. “Breaking June’s record with another historic July shows the strength of our partnerships with airlines, the dedication of our team, and the confidence travelers place in Sacramento International as their airport of choice.”

While July is traditionally the Airport’s busiest month, travel volumes have remained strong into August. As of August 19, traffic remains on pace with last year, with no sign of slowing down.

With Labor Day weekend approaching, the Airport is preparing for another busy holiday weekend. To help passengers plan and enjoy a smooth experience, SMF recommends:

  • Arrive early: At least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights, especially during peak hours.
  • Plan for parking: Check real-time parking availability at sacramento.aero/parking before heading to the airport. Lots and garages often fill quickly during holiday weekends.
  • Know your options: Consider SacRT Route 142 or Yolobus Route 42, rideshare, or drop-offs to avoid congestion.
  • Pack smart: Review TSA guidelines—liquids must be 3.4 ounces or less in a quart-sized bag.
  • Stay informed: Use your airline’s mobile app for flight updates and check sacramento.aero for parking and shuttle tracking

SMF now offers more than 200 peak day flights on 11 domestic and international carriers, connecting passengers to over 50 nonstop destinations across North America. With new routes added this year to Kansas City, Baltimore, Anchorage, Morelia, and Puerto Vallarta, Sacramento International continues to expand its reach and serve as the gateway to Northern California’s premier destinations.

The Sacramento County Department of Airports is responsible for planning, developing, operating and maintaining the county’s four airports: Sacramento International Airport, Executive Airport, Mather Airport and Franklin Field. Sacramento International Airport offers more than 155 daily nonstop flights on 12 domestic and international carriers to 36 destinations. The regional economic impact of the Sacramento County Department of Airports is more than $4 billion annually. For more information, visit sacramento.aero.
