Airport On Track to Have a Record-Breaking 2017; Growth Rate Up 6.8% Year-to-Date
SACRAMENTO – Sacramento International Airport continues its upward trajectory of increased passenger growth. In October, the airport served 10.5 percent more customers than it did in last October, bringing the airport’s total year-to-date growth to a robust 6.8 percent compared to the same period in 2016.
October marks the airport’s 43rd consecutive month of month-over-month traffic growth.
November and December are expected to finish this year with similar increases. Airline data for November shows a 12.6 percent capacity increase over last November. This pencils out to more than 70,000 additional airline seats being available to Sacramento travelers for November travel.
“Based on flight schedules, we will see continuing growth through the first quarter of 2018, a typically slower time for air travel,” said John Wheat, Director of Airports for the Sacramento County Dept. of Airports. “This type of sustained growth bodes well for the possibility of adding new flights in 2018.”
Since 2016, Sacramento International Airport added nonstop service to Baltimore, Newark, Spokane, and seasonal service to Cabo San Lucas. New carriers have entered the Salt Lake City, Boise, Chicago, Long Beach, and San Diego markets.
In 2018, Sacramento International Airport will offer nonstop service to New Orleans, Austin, St. Louis and Orlando and a year-round option to Cabo San Lucas.
“In 2017, we are on track to break our all-time record of passengers served,” said Wheat.
The highest recorded number of passengers served at Sacramento International Airport was 10.7 million in 2007.
