Airport Schedules Emergency Drill on Wednesday, May 24

SACRAMENTO - Sacramento International Airport (SMF) will conduct a simulated aviation incident to test its emergency preparedness on Wednesday, May 24. Sacramento International Airport holds a full-scale emergency exercise every three years to comply with federal regulations and to give airport staff and community first responders the opportunity to perform as they would in a real emergency.

Signs will be posted to aid the public’s understanding of this simulated incident and notification of the drill will be provided.

The scenario for the exercise is an airplane incident with causalities.  Once the drill begins, emergency responders will arrive at the airport. Medical evacuation helicopters will land on the airfield to transport volunteers with realistic injury makeup to local hospitals.

The exercise will take place from approximately 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. If a real emergency occurs during the planned exercise, the drill will be halted immediately.

The drill is a coordinated effort  which includes American Red Cross, CalStar, CHP, County Coroner,  FAA Air Traffic Control Tower,  Kaiser South, National Guard,REACH Air Medical Services, Sacramento City Fire Dept., Sacramento County Chaplaincy ,  Sacramento County Office of Emergency Services, Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Dept., Sacramento Sheriff’s Dept., Southwest Airlines, Sutter Roseville Medical Center, Mercy San Juan Medical Center, TSA, and UC Davis Medical Center.
