Sacramento International Airport Prepared for Busy Travel Week

Sacramento International Airport is ready to serve holiday travelers with updated holiday decorations, live entertainment, and abundant options for last-minute shopping. Airport staff recommends travelers arrive two hours in advance of flight departure and be prepared for longer-than-usual lines at airport parking facilities, ticket counters, and the TSA security checkpoint.

The biggest crowds are expected beginning Dec. 18 and continuing through Christmas. A second rush is expected on Jan. 3 as holiday travelers fly home.

Make your travel experience easier by being prepared with information. Here are some tips.

IF YOU ARE FLYING:

  • Getting to Sacramento International Airport is as Easy as SMF. Options include taxicabs, SuperShuttle, offsite van and shuttle bus companies, Yolobus public transportation, and on-demand taxicab services like Uber, Lyft, and Wingz.
  • Parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The Economy Lot ($10/day) may fill and at some point during Christmas week. The Daily Lot ($12/day) is minutes from both terminals by walking or taking a shuttle. Hassle-free-parking is available at the garage ($17/day). A popular option at other times of the year, the garage has abundant spaces during the winter holidays.
  • Parking overnight at the Hourly B lot is not recommended, as is it designed – and priced – for short-term parking.
  • For entrances to both the daily lot and the garage, follow the roadway signs guiding vehicles toward Terminal A.
  • Parking lot closures will be posted on overhead and roadway signs visible upon entering the airport.

IF YOU ARE PICKING SOMEONE UP:

  • Don’t circle the terminal looking for your passengers. Save yourself time and gasoline by using the Free Waiting Area, also known as the cell phone lot. Visitors can park and wait until their passenger calls to let them know they have their bags and are at the curb ready to be picked up. It’s a 3-minute drive to both terminals.
  • The doors at Terminal B are numbered and designated by airline name.  Tell your passenger to pick a numbered door to stand by. Tip: Traffic is most congested by doors 1 and 2. It may be easier to pick up passengers outside doors 3 or 4.

FOR EVERYONE

  • A bottle of wine for dinner? Toys for the kids? A little holiday bling for someone special? Airport concessions offer excellent last-minute gift ideas. See a full list here.
  • Musical entertainment will be available on selected dates until Christmas Eve.
  • Follow the airport’s Facebook page and Twitter pages for travel tips.
