SMF Announces Nightly Closures and Detours for I-5 Auxiliary Lanes Project

Sacramento, CA - Travelers planning to use Sacramento International Airport (SMF) in the coming weeks should be aware of a major transportation improvement project that may impact their commute. The Sacramento I-5 Auxiliary Lanes Project, a Caltrans initiative aimed at improving traffic flow and safety, will require nightly closures and detours on specific dates in August.

SMF advises travelers to plan their routes ahead of time and consider using alternative transportation options during the nightly closures. Caltrans and the airport are working together to minimize disruptions during the construction period and ensure the safety and convenience of all passengers and commuters.

The purpose of this project is to enhance safety and update the highway's configuration within the project limits. By easing congestion and merging traffic on southbound I-5 at the Airport Blvd interchange and northbound I-5 at the Arena Boulevard interchange, the project aims to improve traffic flow, reduce collisions, and increase the reliability of goods movement in the region.

Additionally, the project will address merging and weaving movements on I-5 at the Airport Blvd interchange and near the Metro Air Parkway interchange, further increasing travel time reliability, reducing collisions, and enhancing goods transportation on I-5. Traveler information will also be expedited to warn the public of changing traffic conditions, aiming to reduce secondary collisions and congestion.

Nightly closures on I-5:

  • 8/13/23 at 10:00 PM to 8/14/23 at 05:00 AM
  • 8/14/23 at 10:00 PM to 8/15/23 at 05:00 AM
  • 8/15/23 at 10:00 PM to 8/16/23 at 05:00 AM
  • 8/16/23 at 10:00 PM to 8/17/23 at 05:00 AM
  • 8/10/23 at 10:00 PM to 8/11/23 at 05:00 AM
  • 8/17/23 at 10:00 PM to 8/18/23 at 05:00 AM (striping and placing k-rail (the work this day will be pending striping))
  • 8/20/23 at 10:00 PM to 8/21/23 at 05:00 AM (place gawk screen, mill and off-haul)

Customers leaving SMF and taking I-5 south should proceed East onto Bayou Way to I-5 South via Metro Air Parkway.

Customers coming to SMF from Woodland have two detour options:

Continue on I-5 South to the Metro Air Parkway exit, turn right turn onto Metro Air Parkway, and right turn onto Bayou Way. Continue West on Bayou Way to Airport Blvd and turn right to proceed to SMF.
Or continue on I-5 South toward Sacramento past exit 528 (Airport Blvd), take the Metro Air Parkway exit, turn left and take I-5 North to the Airport Blvd exit.
